How to calculate an average grade
Average = (grade₁ + grade₂ + … + gradeₙ) ÷ n
Every grade counts equally in a simple average. The calculator converts letters and fractions to percentages first, so you can mix formats: B+ counts as 88%, 18/20 as 90%.
Worked example
Averaging five quiz scores
Quizzes: 96, 88, 74, 91, 18/20 (90%). Sum = 439. Average = 439 ÷ 5 = 87.8%, a B+.
When a simple average is the right tool
- Averaging scores within one category, like all your quizzes, before weighting.
- Classes where every assignment counts the same.
- Teachers finding a class average on a test from a pasted column of scores.
- Checking a semester average when your quarters are weighted equally.
If your categories have different weights, use the weighted grade calculator. To combine quarters with a final exam, use the semester grade calculator.
Mean, median and why one low score hurts
The average (mean) pulls toward outliers. Four 95s and one 45 average to 85, a full letter grade below most of the work. That's why some teachers drop the lowest quiz. To see the effect, delete your lowest score from the box and compare.
