How to calculate your middle school GPA

Turn each class's letter grade into grade points (an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, and so on), multiply by the class's credits, add them up, and divide by your total credits. If every class counts the same, that's simply the average of your grade points.

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Middle school GPA scale

Most middle and junior high schools use the standard U.S. 4.0 scale:

Letter gradePercentGPA points
A93–100%4.0
A-90–92%3.7
B+87–89%3.3
B83–86%3.0
B-80–82%2.7
C+77–79%2.3
C73–76%2.0
C-70–72%1.7
D+67–69%1.3
D63–66%1.0
D-60–62%0.7
F0–59%0.0

Some schools don't use plus and minus grades, so a B+ and a B- both count as 3.0. Others grade with numbers or with marks like 4/3/2/1 (standards-based grading), which isn't a GPA. Your report card or student handbook shows which system your school uses.

Worked example

A 7th grader's report card

English A (4.0), Math B+ (3.3), Science A- (3.7) and Social Studies B (3.0) at 1 credit each, plus Art A (4.0) at 0.5 credit.

(4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 2.0) ÷ 4.5 = 16.0 ÷ 4.5 = 3.56.

Getting ready for high school

Grades in 8th grade often decide whether you're placed in Honors or advanced classes in 9th grade. To see where a class stands right now, use the grade calculator, or the average grade calculator for a list of scores. Once you start high school, switch to the high school GPA calculator, which adds Honors and AP weighting.

Frequently asked questions

Does middle school GPA matter?

It doesn't go on your college applications, but it can matter for placement in high school Honors or advanced math, magnet and selective high school admissions, and some academic awards. It's also good practice for tracking grades before high school starts.

Is middle school GPA weighted?

Usually not. Most middle schools use an unweighted 4.0 scale, where an A is 4.0 no matter the class. A few districts add a bonus for high school credit classes taken in 8th grade, like Algebra I; if yours does, use the high school GPA calculator.

What is a good GPA in middle school?

A 3.0 (a B average) is solid, and a 3.5 or higher (mostly A's and B+'s) is strong. Many middle school honor rolls start at 3.0, with high honors at 3.5 or above.

How do I count classes that only meet half the year?

Give them half the credit. If a full-year class counts as 1, enter 0.5 for a semester or quarter elective like art or health. If your school counts every class the same, leave all credits at 1.

Does 8th grade GPA carry over to high school?

Generally no. Your high school GPA starts in 9th grade. The exception is a high school course taken in middle school (often Algebra I or a world language), which some districts put on the high school transcript.

Do pass/fail classes count?

No. Classes graded pass/fail or with a mark like S/U don't have grade points, so leave them out of the calculator.

What if my school doesn't use credits?

Leave every class at 1 credit. When all classes count the same, your GPA is just the average of your grade points, which is how most junior high report cards work.
