How to use the EOC calculator

  1. Current grade: your course grade before the EOC, from your gradebook. A letter like B+ works for a quick estimate.
  2. EOC weight: the percent of your final course grade the EOC counts for. Your syllabus or student handbook lists it.
  3. Goal: pick the course grade you want. The table shows the EOC score needed for every letter range at once.

The EOC formula

EOC score needed = (goal − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

where w is the EOC weight as a decimal (20% = 0.2). It's the same math as a final exam, which is why the final grade calculator gives the same answer.

Worked example

An 84% in Algebra I, EOC worth 20% (example weight)

To finish with a B- (80%): (80 − 84 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = (80 − 67.2) ÷ 0.2 = 64% on the EOC.

To finish with an A- (90%): (90 − 67.2) ÷ 0.2 = 114%, not reachable on the EOC alone.

Scoring 75% on the EOC gives 84 × 0.8 + 75 × 0.2 = 82.2%, still a B-.

Check how your school counts the EOC

EOC rules are set by each state and often by each district, and they change. Before you rely on a number, confirm two things with your teacher or counselor: what percent of the course grade the EOC counts for, and how a scale score is converted to a 0–100 grade. Then enter those numbers above.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EOC?

EOC stands for end-of-course exam: a state or district test taken at the end of courses like Algebra I, Biology, English and U.S. History. In many schools the EOC score counts as a fixed share of your final course grade, the same way a final exam does.

How do I calculate what I need on my EOC?

Use: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the EOC's weight as a decimal. With an 84% course grade, an EOC worth 20% and an 80% goal: (80 − 84 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 64%.

How much does the EOC count toward my grade?

It depends on your state and district, and it can change from year to year. Your syllabus, student handbook or school counselor will have the exact percentage. Enter that number as the EOC weight.

What if my EOC is reported as a scale score?

Some states report EOC results as scale scores or achievement levels and convert them to a 0–100 grade before adding them to your course grade, and some don't count them in the course grade at all. Use the converted grade your school puts in the gradebook. If the EOC doesn't count toward your grade, you only need to meet the passing standard.

Can I pass the class if I fail the EOC?

Often yes. If the EOC is worth 20% and you go in with an 80%, a 40 on the EOC still leaves you at 72%. Type any score into the 'What if I score' box to check. Some states also require passing certain EOCs to graduate, separately from the course grade, so ask about retakes.
