What Letter Grade Is a 2.5 GPA?

A 2.5 falls between a C+ (2.3) and a B- (2.7) on the 4.0 scale. It isn't either letter: it's the credit-weighted average of all your grade points.

Where 2.5 sits on the 4.0 scale

Each letter grade earns grade points. Your GPA multiplies each class's points by its credits, adds them up and divides by total credits. The highlighted rows are the steps a 2.5 sits between.

Letter grades and grade points on the 4.0 scale
LetterGrade points
A4.0
A-3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B-2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C-1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
D-0.7
F0.0

Many schools use this plus/minus scale, but not all: some give an A+ 4.3, and some have no plus or minus grades at all. Your school's scale is the one that counts.

Why students look up a 2.5

A 2.5 sits exactly halfway between a C+ (2.3) and a B- (2.7), so it is the GPA where a transcript of mostly C's and mostly B's meet. Some schools publish academic-standing rules near 2.0 (for example, federal financial-aid satisfactory progress often references a 2.0 cumulative college GPA), and some transfer or major programs list higher minimums. Always compare your transcript to the published rule.

Those cutoffs are set by each school or program, and they say which GPA they mean (cumulative, major-only, or a recalculated core GPA). Compare your number to the published rule rather than to a general benchmark.

Official examples to verify: federal satisfactory academic progress, National Honor Society eligibility, and your college's catalog or transfer office.

Two semesters that both make a 2.5

The same 15-credit schedule, two different report cards. The first keeps every grade close together; the second spreads them out. Both work out to 2.50, which is why a GPA can't tell you anyone's grades or percentages.

Credits matter as much as letters: the 4-credit classes move the result four times as much as the 1-credit seminar. Enter your own classes in the GPA calculator to see your exact number.

If your 2.5 is weighted

Many high schools report a weighted GPA that adds points for harder classes, usually 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, IB or dual enrollment. A weighted and an unweighted 2.5 are not the same record.

Worked example

A weighted 2.5 with AP and Honors classes

Say 2 of every 6 equal-credit classes were AP and 1 was Honors. The bonus averages (2 × 1.0 + 1 × 0.5) ÷ 6 = 0.42 per class.

2.5 − 0.42 = 2.08 unweighted.

Colleges and scholarship programs often recalculate GPAs with their own rules, so know which version a requirement uses. The GPA converter removes the weighting for your own mix of classes.

How to raise a 2.5 GPA

The more credits you have, the less one term moves your GPA. Here's what one more 15-credit term does to a 2.5 depending on how far into college you are:

Cumulative GPA after one more 15-credit term, starting from 2.5
Credits so farNext term 3.0Next term 3.5Next term 4.0
302.672.833.00
602.602.702.80
902.572.642.71

To reach a 2.7, you'd need about 5 credits of straight A's after 30 completed credits, or about 10 after 60.

It works the other way too: after 30 credits, a 15-credit term below a 1.00 would pull a 2.5 under 2.0.

Retaking a class can be faster than adding new A's if your school replaces or averages the old grade, but grade replacement rules differ by school and some programs still count the original grade, so check your catalog first.

Common questions

What letter grade is a 2.5 GPA?

There isn't one letter grade for a GPA. A 2.5 falls between a C+ (2.3) and a B- (2.7) on the 4.0 scale. It isn't either letter: it's the credit-weighted average of all your grade points.

What percentage is a 2.5 GPA?

A GPA can't be converted to one percentage. It averages grade points, each letter covers a range of percentages, and schools set those ranges differently. For example, B-, B-, C, C+, B and C+, B+, D, B-, A in the same five classes both average 2.50.

Is a 2.5 GPA weighted or unweighted?

It depends on how your school reports it. If a 2.5 is weighted and 2 of every 6 equal-credit classes were AP (+1.0) and 1 was Honors (+0.5), the unweighted GPA is about 2.08.

How do I raise a 2.5 GPA to a 2.7?

With 30 credits completed, it takes about 5 credits of straight A's to reach 2.7; with 60 completed, about 10. Retaking a low grade can be faster if your school replaces it, but policies differ.
